Sheila Mahadevan is an Associate Attorney in the Immigration Section of Zelnick & Erickson, P.C.  In 2004, Sheila received a Bachelor of Science degree in International Affairs and Modern Languages from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA.  In 2011, Sheila received a Juris Doctor degree from Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., where she was the recipient of a 3-year academic merit scholarship.

Prior to commencing her legal studies, Sheila served as a Paralegal & Advocate with the Georgia Law Center for the Homeless, a non-profit legal clinic dedicated to providing quality legal assistance to the homeless population of the metro-Atlanta area.  Sheila then served as an Immigration Assistant in the Nonimmigrant Visa Section of the San Francisco, CA office of Berry, Appleman & Leiden, LLP and as a Legal Assistant at Jackson & Hertogs, LLP in San Francisco, CA.  While with Jackson & Hertogs, LLP, Sheila gained considerable experience in business immigration law, assisting attorneys, corporate clients, and individual clients in the preparation and filing of all aspects of the nonimmigrant (L-1, H-1B, TN, and E-3) and immigrant visa process (PERM, I-140 immigrant petitions, and adjustment of status applications).  Sheila also provided assistance with family-based immigration matters and assisted with pro-bono cases.  Lastly, Sheila conducted staff trainings on procedures related to L-1 petitions/applications, labor substitutions, and USCIS e-filing.

While in law school, Sheila completed a volunteer legal clerkship with the Georgia Appellate Practice and Educational Resource Center in Atlanta, Georgia - a non-profit dedicated to providing post-conviction relief to the men and women incarcerated on Georgia’s death row.  Sheila also completed a legal clerkship with the D.C. Office of Police Complaints where she assisted the D.C. Police Complaints Board in adopting its stance against the District’s participation in ICE’s Secure Communities program.  Sheila was a founding member and executive board member of Howard Law’s Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (HU-APALSA).

Sheila is admitted to the Virginia State Bar. Sheila is an active member of the D.C. chapters of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA-DC), the South Asian Bar Association (SABA-DC), and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA-DC).  She serves as a Committee Member on the Mentorship Committee of SABA-DC and as a Committee Member on the Pro Bono Committee and Citizenship Day Committee in AILA-DC.  She also volunteers with the D.C. Bar Association Pro Bono Program’s quarterly immigration clinic and with AILA-DC’s annual naturalization clinic in Washington, D.C.  In her spare time, Sheila enjoys cycling and scuba diving.
