Step-Parent Adoption
We love the opportunity to help people with step-parent adoptions. 

 

When one biological parent has died or consents to the adoption of the child by a step-parent, a step-parent adoption is a fairly speedy and low hassle process. 

 

In the case of consent, the biological parent simply needs to file a notarized consent to adoption.  The other biological parent and his/her new spouse join in a petition to adopt the child.  After the adoption, the child is the legal dependent of the petitioners.  The other biological parent is then relieved of any future liability for child support, and has no further rights of custody or visitation for the child. 

 

In certain cases, this may be the most unselfish thing a parent might do for his/her biological child.  Given that the adoption eliminates the obligations and rights of one person, and bestows them on another person, careful consideration and understanding of the law must be taken before embarking on this life-changing step.
